A Grackle Morning
Grackles greet the morning at the Outer Banks. A flock of about 60 perched on the dune fences, cleaning themselves in the morning sun.
Waiting for Sunrise
The grackles swarmed around on the dune, some looking for a tasty morsel, some having their morning bath. This grackle balanced on the dune fence, awaiting the first glimpse of light from the sun. I wonder what she was thinking.

Rise
A cotton flower. So delicate.
Many times on travels east, the cotton fields lay brown and almost barren, having been harvested. I never knew how they grew and I wanted to find out. I purchased some seeds to plant in the container garden and was happy to see they grew – quickly! After a time, these lovely white flowers appeared – only to disappear and pink flowers appeared! (Showing my ignorance here, I didn’t know they self-pollinate and then turn from white to pink before dropping off the plant.) I watched these with great interest this summer, feeling very much like this plant, quickly aging and dropping off. Bright flashes of energy, to quickly be sapped and spent.
I’m still waiting for the plant to show the puffy tufts we know as cotton, but I expect that won’t be long now. It will produce results, it’s life’s work, so to speak. Again, the plant and I have that in common.
It’s been a difficult time, lately, but I expect my life’s work will soon show – again, and often – as well. Thanks to those that still follow this blog and haven’t completely given up on me.
